Last night Marc Thiessen appeared on The Daily Show to hawk his new book, Courting Disaster: How the CIA Kept America Safe and How Barack Obama Is Inviting the Next Attack. To say the ensuing discussion between the former Bush speechwriter and Jon Stewart became a little heated would be a gross understatement. I encourage anyone who hasn’t seen the full exchange – no matter which side you’re on – to spend about a half-hour watching probably the best debate in decades.
Plenty of facts, plenty of hypotheticals, plenty of lively exchanges, and a few actual moments of agreement. Even if you accept the entire Bush/Cheney narrative as gospel, you can’t automatically assume the critiques of President Obama’s policies, by conservatives, are accurate. The al-Qaeda Seven are terrorists, just like any attorney who represents a rapist deserves a little snip-snip. Really? Who is the final arbiter of what makes us safe, and even more to the point, who decides exactly what “safe” means?
Intelligence is a complex paradigm, as you’ll see. Check it out here.
